Game Report - Braves at Giants

    May 2, 1999

    From Giants Manager Frank Serafini

"Jim Gaillardetz threw a complete game, striking out eight and allowing 10 hits,3 walks, to lead the home team Giants to an 8-4 win over the Braves, Greg Clinton taking the loss. Both teams traded a run the first inning. The Braves Bob Saggesse, on his way to a three hit day, opened with a single, Myerson singled, Bob Wood grounded out to Jim Harvey on a close play at first, scoring Saggesse. The Giants Mike Perry doubled, Gaillardetz singled, Jim Harvey knocked in Perry with a single. In the bottom of the second Jack Muse led off with a single, Frank Serafini singled then Pat Callahan singled in Muse. Mike Lapointe walked to load the bases, and Serafini scored when all runners advanced on a Clinton wild pitch. Rick Serafini walked to load up the bases again, but Callahan was cut down at the plate on an fc grounder thrown to home to catcher Jerry Ward. In the top of the four, Bobby Wood went the opposite way, hitting a 2 strike, high and outside screwball over the right fielder's head. Wood scooted around the bases and never looked back, rounding third and heading for home. Giant catcher, Frank Serafini had the position at the plate with the ball on it's way from the cutoff. The ball came in on the first base side of the plate the same time Wood started his slide into home. The throw pulled Serafini off just enough for Wood to slip under as he applied the tag. SAFE!! was the call from Umpire Lou Tanguay and Wood had an exciting in-side-the-Shedd-Park homer, adding one more run. In the bottom of the fourth, the Giants got 2 more when Jack Muse doubled down the left field line, Frank Serafini singled sending Muse to third. Serafini then stole second base and Mike Lapointe singled in both runners. The Braves got another run in the fifth when Ryan walked, Lunger walked and Ryan scored when Distrilaris hit into a fielder's choice, Lunger forced at second. The Giants also added one in their half of the fifth, Andre Medina singled, Rick Serafini ran for him as Medina came up limping with a pulled hamstring. Serafini went to second on a WP, Jeff Buxton grounded out, moving Serafini over to third and he scored on a WP. The Giants picked up one more in the sixth when Gaillardetz singled, stole second and scored when Jimmy Harvey reached on an error by the Braves third baseman. The Braves last run came in the top of the eighth when Jay went the other way with a sharp ground ball over the third base bag and kept to a single by a hustling Steve Ford in left field. Distrialaris followed with a single and Saggesse collected his third single, scoring Jay. Gaillardetz got Myerson to fly easily to Muse at 2nd base and Bobby Wood to ground out to Muse, to end a real threat by the Braves. The Braves mounted another threat in the top of the ninth when Warren MacNeil flied to center fielder Mike Poitras, Giampa singled, Clinton walked, Jerry Ward hit a sharp grounder to short but it hit Giampa on his way to third for the second out, Ryan K'd to end the game."
