          Update, August 29, 2000:

The list of contestants is now up to 33.

The following are the rules for the first-annual Home Run Hitting Contest from Chris Augeri:
          • Two Home Run fences will be used. The existing fence measures 324 feet down each foul line, 352 to each power alley, and 383 feet to dead center field.
          • A secondary temporary fence will also be set up 30 feet in from the existing fence. The dimensions will be 294 feet down each foul line, 322 feet to each power alley, and 353 feet to dead center field.
          • A home run over the shorter fence will be awarded with 1 point.
          • A home run over the existing fence will be awarded with 2 points. The system will reward both power and consistency.

          • Round 1 - Elimination Round

          • All batters will bat. Each batter will continue to attempt to hit home runs until they have recorded 15 outs. An out is recorded when a batter takes a swing at a pitched ball and fails to hit a home run. A swing and miss counts as an out. The top 16 home run hitters will advance to Round 2. All other batters are eliminated. In the event of a tie for the 16th spot, a one-pitch tie-breaker will determine who will advance to the next round. Each batter may take one swing (they can take pitches as usual) and the furthest ball hit will win the tie-breaker.

          • Round 2 - Sweet 16

          • The rules remain the same as Round 1, except that 8 batters will advance to the Semi-Final round. The top home run hitters in the previous round will have the choice when he (they) hit. In the event that this is a tie, the order will be decide alphabetically, by last name first.

          • Round 3 - Semi-Finals

          • The rules remain the same as Round 2, except that only 2 batters will advance to the Final Round and each batter will have only 10 outs.

          • Round 4 - Final Round

          • The two finalist will have two turns at bat. Each at-bat will continue until 5 outs have been recorded. In the event of a tie after 10 total outs each, both players will have an additional at-bat and will continue until they have hit 3 outs or have won the contest. If a tie still exists, a Sudden Death, one-out playoff will determine the winner. The first to hit a home run is the winner. A coin toss will decide who begins the playoff.

          Update, August 19, 2000:

The contest is now open to anyone in the league (it was previously only for those who had hit a home run during the 2000 season) and is on a first-come, first-served basis. Those interested should email Chris Augeri. The list of contestants is now up to 27.

The following is from OTB National League Vice President, Chris Augeri:

For the second year in a row, we're very fortunate to have our OTB Championship game at LeLacheur Park, home of the Lowell Spinners. The cost for our league, unfortunately, has become more expensive to play in such a beautiful stadium. We're holding this contest to raise funds to pay the cost overrun for that was not planned for in our annual budget.

The contest will be limited to 40 OTB players and will be held at Dracut High School Field (we are waiting for field approval as yet, but we don't anticipate any problems). The Dracut field was selected because this field seems to be the most consistent for righties and lefties. We expect the contest to run approximately 2 hours.

The qualifying criteria for which 40 contestants is still being worked out. Anyone that has at least one dinger this year will have first choice to compete. I assume some or many will not be able to or would not like to attend therefore anyone else wanting to compete without a dinger can have their name put in a hat for luck of the draw at our board meeting on August 17th, to complete the 40 player competition. The cost for each player participating is $20.

The first round will be an elimination round and only the top 16 hitters will advance to the next round which will then reduce to 8, 4, and the final round. For this year anyway, we won't compete American League versus National League.

The competitors should plan on having someone there to throw pitches to them. I am attempting to borrow an L-screen from Warren Ignacio to protect our pitchers. Anyone interested in helping out in any way such as pitching to hitters if neccesary, shagging balls, officiating legit homeruns (fair/foul) would be appreciated. We're also considering having a barbeque if there is enough interest.

There will be trophies for 1st and 2nd place finishers at the contest.
